The main purpose of the Yagyūkai is to correctly preserve and pass down the cultural tradition of Yagyū Shinkage Ryū. Therefore, we have created the Yagyū Shinkage Ryū Heihō Official Site, under the supervision of the current headmaster, to make public and disseminate accurate information about our school.

In the past, we had used the name Shinkage Ryū Heihō for our school, but due to the growing popularity of classical martial arts, we started to use the name Yagyū Shinkage Ryū Heihō in April 1988 to make clear that our tradition has been passed down within the Yagyū family.

Yagyū Sekishūsai Munetoshi, the second headmaster, succeeded the founder, Kamiizumi Ise-no-kami Fujiwara Nobutsuna, after Nobutsuna approved of his mutō -no-kurai (concept of no sword). Hyōgonosuke Toshitoshi, the son of Sekishūsai’s eldest son, became the third headmaster after being taught by his grandfather Sekishūsai. In 1615, Hyōgonosuke began to serve the first lord of the Owari domain, Tokugawa Yoshinao, as a teacher of swordsmanship.

Yagyū Shinkage Ryū has been passed down by fourteen heads of the Yagyū family and seven lords of the Owari domain (one of the seven passed away before assuming his duties as lord). Currently serving as the 22nd headmaster is Yagyū Kōichi Taira Toshinobu.

Since the Meiji Restoration the Ryū has had to overcome many difficulties, so in 1955 the 20th headmaster, Yagyū Toshinaga, established the Yagyūkai to preserve and protect the tradition.

The current headmaster has been continuing the efforts to preserve Yagyū Shinkage Ryū based on the traditions that have been transmitted by the past headmasters and their assistants. This includes teaching members through a direct face-to-face relationship and delivering lectures (Kodo) on the texts and oral transmissions of the school.
